Many Hong Kong residents brushed off the No 8 signal which was raised early on Tuesday as they went to the coast to take photos and do their morning workouts.

Even residents at the seaside housing estate of Heng Fa Chuen on Hong Kong Island – which was badly affected during Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018 – shrugged off the storm signal.

A few continued their morning exercises despite the typhoon warning, while some were out to feel the strength of the wind and take photos.

Workers were seen setting up barriers near the sea to prevent flooding in the area, but some residents said they were not worried at all.

"This typhoon is really gentle. It doesn't feel like a typhoon number eight. It's always so windy here on any other days," said one woman.

A 10-year-old boy said he didn't think the wind was strong at all.

"It's comfortable. I think we could have continued to go to school. It's boring at home," he said.

At another seaside housing estate, South Horizons in Aberdeen, residents were also relaxed.

An elderly woman said she didn't even know the No 8 signal had been issued when she woke up.

"My tai chi class has been cancelled. Now I'm going for a walk. I wonder if the pool is still open at my clubhouse as I want to go for a swim," she said.
