Hong Kong recorded its third Covid-19-related death in a week on Thursday, after a stroke patient at Princess Margaret Hospital died in the early hours of the morning.

The 55-year-old had suffered a stroke in the Philippines last month, and was only brought to Hong Kong via an air ambulance for treatment on Tuesday.

He had already been in a serious condition when he arrived, and was running a high fever, according to the hospital.

He was then tested for the coronavirus and was confirmed to be infected on Wednesday.

However, his condition had already started deteriorating, and he developed severe sepsis, before passing away at 1.30am.

The hospital said in a statement that it is saddened by the death and would offer necessary assistance to his family members.

It’s not immediately clear what role the coronavirus had in his death, and the case has been passed on to the coroner for investigation.

This is the seventh death of a patient in Hong Kong who had tested positive for Covid-19.

Last Saturday, a 68-year-old woman coronavirus patient who lived at a Sha Tin public housing estate passed away, followed by the death of a 72-year-old man who lived in the same block three days later.

They were among nine residents of the same building at Lek Yuen Estate who have tested positive for Covid-19 since late May.

Hong Kong currently has 1,179 confirmed cases.
