A psychologist and adviser to the government on education has urged parents to stay calm when discussing politics with their children at a time of social unrest and deep generational divides.

Dr Chui Yat-hung, a member of the government's Committee on Home-School Co-operation, made the remark after being asked about reports that parents had thrown children out of their homes after falling out over the months of increasingly chaotic protests in the SAR.

"At this moment we have to stay calm and think more rationally, and to explain to the children, with more patience, and make them understand your views," said Chui, the head of the department of applied social sciences at the Institute of Higher Education.

"But don't try to persuade them. Just explain your views. That's good enough. I think parents and children can have different views."

Young people have been at the forefront of the four-month protest movement that was sparked by a now-scrapped extradition bill.

Police said earlier this month that some 750 of the 2,379 people arrested in months of protests were under the age of, of whom 104 were aged under 16.
