A four-metre tall statue that was erected at the top of Lion Rock by anti-government protesters on Sunday was found collapsed and broken on Monday.
According to online pictures, the statue's feet were broken, and there were red marks on the body.
The team responsible for transporting the "Statue of Democracy in Hong Kong" to the top of the Lion Rock said that they had expected vandalism of the statue and there was no plan to try and reinstall it.
They also said that even if the statue was not put back up, the memory of it on the hilltop will remain in people's minds.
According to media reports, a team of 20 people transported the statue to the hilltop in the early hours of Sunday.
The statue, fashioned after a protester who was injured in the eye during a protest on August 11, was slightly damaged during the trek up and had a broken hand when it was erected.
More than a hundred hikers had trekked up the hill to see it.
