Hong Kong pharmacists on Tuesday urged the protesters not to disrupt medical services during demonstrations, saying it deprives people of their right to access health care services.

Chairwoman of the Practicing Pharmacists Association, Iris Chang, said the Sheung Shui protest on July 13 has affected the operation of dispensaries, which denied an essential service to the public.

Chang pointed out during protest clashes, people do turn to pharmacists for bandages, saline and advice. "All that we provide without hesitation," she said.

"We also have no hesitation to speak out for our patients. We need to protect them. So we are here to voice their views and protect the safety of our patients," she said.

Chang urged protesters to conduct their activities peacefully and take extra care when dealing with pharmacies.

She reiterated that she respects the freedom of speech and welcomes anyone, including protesters, to visit the dispensaries when in need.

The association said it has written to Chief Executive to express their concerns over recent reports of counterfeit vaccines, asking urgent steps to be taken.

Registered Pharmacist Alex Cheung said if medical staff follows the proper procedures of vaccine purchase, the problem of counterfeit stuff coming to the clinics can be avoided.
