Police and protesters took part in a tense stand-off in Yuen Long on Saturday after a large group of people turned up in response to an online call for a demonstration.
The demonstrators, who were heeding calls to ‘recover’ Yuen Long, started occupying parts of Castle Peak Road at around 8 pm.
They chanted slogans against alleged police brutality and called for the disbandment of the force. They also hurled abuse at officers and set up barricades, blocking the road.
There were occasional shouting matches between the protesters and riot police officers, and some of the demonstrators were taken to one side for identity checks.
Later, police fired tear gas as they cleared the protesters.
Police say protesters damaged traffic lights in the area.
