The observatory said on Monday that it expects to issue the Strong Wind Signal No 3 between 5pm and 7pm, as a tropical depression over central to northern parts of the South China Sea intensifies gradually as it moves towards Hainan.

While the morning saw mainly fine weather in the territory, meteorologists warned that winds would strengthen later in the day and there would be a few showers by night.

Strong winds and heavy rain were expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

At 11am on Monday, the tropical depression was about 580 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong.
