Tension is high in various districts across Hong Kong as demonstrators express their anger with the government, exacerbated by the police’s shooting of an unarmed young protester in Sai Wan Ho on Monday morning.
Hundreds of bricks were dug up from the pedestrian pavements in Wong Tai Sin and hurled onto the traffic lanes on Lung Cheung Road, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Police took away at least one of the protesters who had gathered in the area.
One resident, surnamed Chan, said she was furious with the police operation because officers had threatened those who were simply queuing at a bus stop.
“Actually, we did nothing this morning but they just suddenly used their gun to point at us and shout at us. We are just waiting for the bus wanting to go to work but they just shout at us and say that we are now in an illegal gathering. Actually it is very ridiculous and [nonsensical]”, she said.
Hundreds of protesters also set up roadblocks in Kwai Fong and vandalised nearby Kwai Hing MTR Station in protest over a police officer seemingly repeatedly driving his motorcycle into protesters on purpose, knocking some of them over.
Police trying to clear debris from Hing Fong Road fired projectiles at a crowd on a bridge who were heckling officers and throwing objects at them. As soon as the officers had left, protesters blocked the road once again.
As residents lined the road, at least three were hit by some kind of liquid thrown from a residential building, with ambulance staff and other people helping to wash the chemical off their arms, legs and faces.
Meanwhile, chaos also broke out in Hung Hom and Tseung Kwan O after hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets, setting barricades on fire and hurling insults at police officers who were on standby.
