The MTR announced on Wednesday that services at Kwun Tong station will resume on Thursday morning for the first time since an arson attack and “extreme vandalism” forced the railway to close the station.

However, the firm said in a statement that some of the repairs are yet to be finished, and crowd control measures will be put in place.

The MTR Corporation added that several other stations may remain closed as key repairs are still being done.

It said escalators soaked in water, as well as broken sprinklers, will require more time to fix.

The railway again dismissed rumours that it had intentionally allowed people to damage station facilities.

“We strongly refute these false allegations. Illegal acts of vandalism and arson have severely damaged our assets, undermined the safety of passengers and our staff, disrupted our services and impacted on our maintenance cost and fare revenues”, the statement said.

It said the customer service centre at Kwun Tong was set on fire by people who broke into the station last Friday after the station had been closed and the police had already left.
