The government confirmed on Wednesday that the Legislative Council election will go ahead on September 6.

The date was tentatively set last month, but the government said in a statement that Chief Executive Carrie Lam has now made a final decision on the matter.

The nomination period for the poll will run from July 18-31.

A spokesman said the current Legco will be prorogued, meaning all its work will be suspended, at the start of the nomination period.

The nomination and polling dates will be published in the official Gazette on June 12.

More than 400,000 people here registered as voters last year – a record high – putting the number of voters here at around 4.45 million, as the government struggles to deal with months of social unrest.

Pan-democratic forces have said they are aiming to win a majority of seats in the September polls, on the back of a landslide victory in the District Council election last November.
