Hong Kong's school children will start going back to class at the end of May after months of staying at home due to the coronavirus outbreak, although at first this is likely to be only for half-day sessions.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced that secondary three to secondary five students will be back in their classrooms from May 27, which will be just after the end of the DSE exams which are currently underway.

Lam said children in primary four, five and six, and secondary one and two will return to class on June 8, with younger primary school children and those in kindergarten three going back on June 15.

But she said there will be no classes for the rest of this year for children in the first two years of kindergarten.

As for private and international schools, the government said being as their curriculums are different and their properties aren't used for DSE exams, they can open in two or three phases anytime from May 20.

Education Secretary Kevin Yeung said resuming classes in phases will make it easier on schools to adapt to the pandemic situation and they can learn as they go along.

He said half-day sessions for students would be the starting point.

All schools in Hong Kong have been closed since the Lunar New Year holiday because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
