A NGO which helps people from ethnic minorities has accused some schools of not giving a clear picture of how they are utilising government funding aimed at helping ethnic minorities learn Chinese.

The Education Bureau spends around HK$200 million annually, giving subsidies of up to HK$1.5 million to each primary and secondary school which admits non-Chinese speaking students.

Hong Kong Unison said on Monday that not all schools are disclosing whether they receive such funding, or how they are using it.

The group said after examining the annual plans and reports of some 180 schools in Yau Tsim Mong, Yuen Long and Eastern districts, they found that many of them are silent on the matters.

It urged schools which are getting government funding to be more transparent about its efforts.
