The person in charge of turning a sports centre in Sai Ying Pun into a Covid-19 testing laboratory said the facility could handle up to 500,000 samples a day if group testing is used.

Cao Sujie of the mainland testing firm, BGI Genomics, told the Xinhua news agency that instead of testing individual samples one by one, three or five samples could be mixed together and tests could be run on the cocktails.

This method is used usually to eliminate negative results quicker as they form the majority of the samples.

Cao said 600 laboratory staff could work on three shifts a day at the new centre. He also recommended taking throat swabs for the tests as the results would be more accurate.

Hong Kong is aiming to ramp up its testing capacity from the current 10,000 a day to hundreds of thousands with the help of mainland authorities.

The authorities have also announced that they will roll out a universal testing scheme to anyone who wants one, starting later this month, as Hong Kong battles a third wave of coronavirus cases.
