The RTHK Programme Staff Union said on Wednesday that it has decided against applying for an injunction to protect journalists from attacks and stop interruptions to their work.

The union said it will instead assist individual members who wish to lodge civil lawsuits against alleged mistreatment by officers.

The union held a meeting to consider, among other things, seeking the courts' help to protect its members.

But some members raised concerns about the likely chance of success and the impact an injunction may have on the rule of law. Others noted that abusing journalists is already a violation of the police force's guidelines.

Union members also voted to press the Director of Broadcasting not to penalise a reporter who took part in protest action at the police press briefing on Monday.

In a statement on Tuesday, the broadcaster said it had sought to find out more about the protest from the reporter involved. But it was silent on whether any action would be taken against him.
