RTHK's Programme Staff Union has called on the police to disclose the identity of the officers who attacked and ripped the face mask off one of the station's journalists on Sunday and actively investigate whether the police followed regulations.

The union pointed out that the video journalist was filming from the pavement on Nathan Road, wearing a reflective vest with the RTHK logo on it. His camera was also affixed with the RTHK logo and he had displayed his ID.

The mask incident happened during a lull in the protests, with few people and journalists in the area, and hardly any protesters around.

The same journalist was later hit by pepper spray mixed with blue dye.

The union said it believes that the police clearly targeted the media on Sunday. It said the officers appeared unable to control their emotions or to make rational judgements.

It also questioned whether the police officers involved in the incidents were suitable for frontline duties.

"Police’s unreasonable and rude behaviour deliberately hindered the media from recording the facts and seriously infringed on the freedom of the press," the union statement said.

On Sunday night, RTHK had strongly condemned the "unnecessary force" used by the police, accusing officers of "violently interfering with normal reporting duties".

Meanwhile, in a statement, Hong Kong Free Press said photographer May James, who was arrested on Sunday for obstructing police, was released on Monday.
