A former Correctional Services officer has been found guilty of bribery after he repeatedly asked for roast goose drumsticks from the relative of an inmate and finally received some after months.
Wan Chi-leung has been convicted of two charges of violating the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.
The court heard that Wan, who was the officer-in-charge of the unit that manages the visitor's room at the Pik Uk Correctional Institution, had solicited and accepted roast poultry from a prisoner's mother.
The woman's husband ran a Chinese barbecue shop.
The court heard that the ex-officer had repeatedly asked the woman between August 2017 and January 2018 – once in the presence of her husband – to bring him a roast goose drumstick. But they ignored him.
When the woman went to visit her son on the eve of Lunar New Year in 2018, Wan asked her to bring goose to him on the second day of the holiday.
So the mother on February 17 of that year delivered two boxes of roast goose, which the defendant hid under his jacket and went off to the staff barracks with, the court heard.
Sentencing was adjourned to June 11.
