Patrick Fung speaks to RTHK's Richard Pyne

The Clean Air Network said on Thursday that Hong Kong’s "frustratingly slow" progress in rolling out electric buses is leaving the city lagging behind its regional counterparts.

The green group said there are only around 30 electric buses running in the territory, which is just half a percent of the city's franchised bus fleet.

It said Hong Kong should look to emulate the likes of Singapore and Shenzhen, which have clear plans for adopting electric bus technology.

The group has released a report comparing various cities' policies on green buses, as well as their expected effectiveness in improving the environment.

It said over 30 cities around the world are using zero-emission buses, and the practical and technical challenges that Hong Kong faces are not unique.

The group's chief executive, Patrick Fung, said unlike the authorities in other cities, the SAR administration has failed to provide infrastructure and policies that support the use of green buses.

The Hong Kong government did announce in February that it was formulating the city's first "electric vehicle roadmap", but it is expected to take a year to draft the framework.

Fung told RTHK's Richard Pyne that officials also need to work with the franchised bus operators on plans to buy new zero-emission vehicles.
