Demonstrations and tight security greeted Police Commissioner Chris Tang when he arrived to attend a Yuen Long District Council meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting was expected to be stormy as the council is now dominated by pro-democracy members who have been critical of police actions.
Many councillors wore black – the colour widely used by anti-government protesters. They also displayed placards that read “the upper beam is not straight, the lower beam becomes a thief”, referring to the recent arrests of some officers linked to a drugs bust.
Outside the venue, more than two dozen pro-Beijing demonstrators rallied in support of the police, and they accused councillors of staging a political show and ignoring livelihood issues.
A smaller group of anti-government protesters were also there, raising slogans.
A shouting match ensued between the different groups at one point, but officers kept the two sides apart to prevent the situation from escalating.
