The District Court has withdrawn a rioting charge against a social worker over a protest in Wan Chai last year, for the lack of prima facie evidence.
Jackie Chen, a council member of the Social Workers’ General Union, is free to go but the court said seven other defendants charged with rioting has a case to answer, after the prosecution finished providing all the evidence.
Chen was arrested in Causeway Bay on August 31 last year during an anti-extradition bill rally.
Among the seven facing riot charges, a 23-year-old chef was also charged with one count of possession of offensive weapons.
He was accused of possessing a retractable baton and a petrol bomb when he was detained on Hennessy Road.
