Some of the major restaurants chains in Hong Kong are joining an effort to cut down the use of plastic by not offering straws to customers on every eigth day of the month.

In all, around 400 outlets – including units of popular chains Cafe de Coral, KFC and Yoshinoya – will join the the “No Straw Campaign” organised by the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation.

The foundation started the campaign last year with an aim to cut down plastic pollution.

Its chairwoman, Judy Chen, said the restaurants will not offer any plastic straws with drinks on the 8th day of the month. But if customers request them, a non-plastic straw will be made available.

Chen said that she’s confident people will start to use fewer plastic straws after this campaign starts on Friday.
