New People's Party chairwoman Regina Ip says the Chief Executive Carrie Lam should make more use of her influence, or "soft power", and that it was regrettable that Lam had said she had nothing apart from the thirty-thousand-strong police force.

"A political leader should not just rely on hard power," Ip said. "She should think more about how to deploy her soft power. That's what all leaders do. You need to exert your influence."

Lam's comments about the police were made to members of the business community. In a leaked audio clip, she said that's why any action by the government had to take into account the force's reaction.

But noting Lam might have been emotional when making the remarks, Ip, who is also an Executive Councillor, said the CE still had the support of civil servants and political allies, like herself.

Ip, though, said it was clear that Lam was at a loss at how to exert her influence.
