A group of pro-democracy district councillors is appealing for information on an animal cruelty case in Sham Tseng, where more than a dozen pets died, widely believed to have thrown from a building.
The Department of Justice has decided not to prosecute two suspects after police completed their investigation and evaluated the evidence.
Moon Tam, a community organiser from Sham Tseng, said they are asking the public to come forward with any information to find those responsible.
A dozen pets – including rabbits, a guinea pig and a cat – were found dead on a slope near the Hong Kong Garden housing estate in February. Another ten animals were found severely injured in the area.
Tam said they are worried that the people who carried out these criminal acts are still free and some residents are scared that such events will repeat.
“We really don’t know what can we do,” she said. “How can we prevent it happening [again]?”
Tam said they are making a public appeal for information. They think some people may have been reluctant to speak to police and said they will ensure privacy to those who come forward.
She also accused the authorities of not caring enough about pets and urged them to take action against animal cruelty.
