  • Protesters vandalise Sha Tin MTR station

What started off as a peaceful gathering at Sha Tin’s New Town Plaza turned violent after some black-clad protesters who were originally taking part in a ‘mask party’ dashed into the adjoining MTR station and vandalised some facilities there.

The incident happened at around 9:30pm, when a handful of demonstrators left the ‘party’ and dashed into the MTR station,

The group broke glass windows of the customer services counter and shoved a fire hose into it. They also damaged turnstiles and ticketing machines with hammers and metal rods.

The group fled the scene minutes after vandalising the station.

Police and firefighters soon arrived and closed off some of the exits at Sha Tin station. But train services operated as normal right up to their scheduled closure at 10 pm.

However, the vandalism didn’t deter the crowds gathered in New Town Plaza.

Elaine, who had been at the mall since 5pm, said she found the timing of the vandalism suspicious and suspected that undercover officers may have been responsible.

Even though the police have repeatedly insisted that officers won't break the law, she’s not convinced.

"We were very peaceful and we were just singing songs, doing our own things. But all of a sudden, something happened. If something was meant to happen, it would've happened like three hours ago instead of just now. So I thought maybe it was the police pretending to be the protesters and vandalising things so they would have an excuse to come to New Town Plaza", she said.
