A group of conservationists on Sunday staged a protest outside the General Post Office in Central against the government's plan to demolish the building to make way for a commercial development.

The Legco Public Works Subcommittee will discuss the plan to relocate the office to Kowloon Bay on Wednesday.

Protesters said tearing down the office may generate up to 12-thousand cubic metres of construction waste, which is enough to fill five swimming pools.

Roy Tam of Green Sense says knocking down a well-functioning building runs contrary to the government's commitment to waste reduction.
