Protesters' representative

Several hundred people rallied outside the British Consulate in Admiralty on Sunday, calling on the UK government to "save Hong Kong".

Waving British flags, they chanted slogans such as "One Country, Two Systems is dead".

They say China has failed to honour the Sino-British Joint Declaration and they want the UK to take action on this.

A representative of the group read out a statement.

"We hereby urge Her Majesty's government to review the status of One Country, Two Systems and act against the material breach of the Sino-British Joint Declaration," he said. "In the light of the great danger we face on a daily basis, it is a must for the British government to conduct all essential reviews of British policies on Hong Kong in order to protect our people."

Others held up placards against the British National Overseas passport, that was given to Hong Kong residents with no direct connection to the UK prior to the handover in 1997.

Campaigners are calling for the controversial passport, which gives visa-free access to the UK but does not allow the holder to settle there, to be upgraded to a full UK passport or something that would permit residency

Last week, nearly 130 UK legislators signed a letter to the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab calling for Commonwealth states to give Hong Kong residents second citizenship. They made the move after Raab gave a cool response to the upgrading of the BNO passport, saying it could undermine "One Country, Two Systems".

Portugal gave full Portuguese citizenship to Macau residents, born before a certain date, prior to its handover in 1999.
