The director of Beijing’s liaison office, Wang Zhimin, says protesters who gathered outside the office’s complex in Western on Sunday night not only challenged the rule of law, but also the central government’s authority, and the country’s sovereignty, security and dignity.

Wang said on Monday that “rioters’ acts” had damaged Hong Kong people’s fundamental well-being and interests, and had hurt the feelings of the entire population of China.

Speaking to the media outside the vandalised complex, Wang said his office was “angry and shocked” to find protesters had thrown eggs and ink at the national emblem, but said it had been replaced with a new one overnight.

But he did not mention any "storming" of the building by protesters – a claim made in a statement issued by the SAR government on Sunday night.

Wang said the liaison office strongly condemns the illegal acts that took place, and will continue to support the SAR government and the Hong Kong police.

He did not respond to questions from reporters.
