  • Protesters accuse US of interfering in SAR's affairs

Members of the Federation of Trade Unions on Saturday accused Washington of interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs and inciting opposition figures to carry out illegal activities.

The group, which comprised former lawmaker Bill Tang and three others, protested outside the US Consulate in Central and highlighted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s recent comments cautioning against the imposition of national security legislation in the city, under Article 23 of the Basic Law.

Pompeo had said that, “Any effort to impose draconian national security legislation on Hong Kong would be inconsistent with Beijing's promises and would impact American interests there."

They also accused Pompeo of trying to shift focus from his own government’s failure to contain the coronavirus.

Another two groups of four protesters each held similar protests earlier in the day.

Social distancing measures imposed at the end of March banned gatherings of more than four people in public places.
