People began blocking roads again in Central on Tuesday evening, around an hour and a half after a protest that began at lunchtime appeared to have come to an end.
Police fired tear gas multiple times throughout the day and made a number of arrests in the afternoon after charging at a crowd.
As officers were finally leaving the scene at around 5pm, they faced abuse from onlookers, prompting them to fire more tear gas.
A young man was seen covered in blood, with those around him saying they believed he had been struck in the head by a tear gas cannister.
Around 200 people then began gathering in Pedder Street and Des Voeux Road once again, with traffic at a standstill, while bricks were also strewn over Connaught Road Central.
Earlier, thousands of protesters, office workers and others had joined an anti-government protest in the financial district, just as they had done the day before.
Buses had been vandalised and commandeered by protesters who used the vehicles to block roads.
