  • Primary school allocation brings relief and tears

The Education Bureau says almost 70 percent of children were given schools of their first three choices in this year's allocation of Primary One schools, the highest level in six years and up slightly from last year.

Getting a place for your child at primary school shouldn't really be a stressful affair but in Hong Kong it is highly competitive. A slot at a school with a so-called good reputation may make it easier for a child to get a place at a top-tier secondary school later on, especially if they are linked. Other factors, like the number of well-know secondary schools in your school district - into which the primary student will probably graduate - play a role.

Many parents say they're happy with the outcome but some cross-boundary applicants complained their children have been allocated schools that are too far from the border. Some disappointed parents broke down in tears.

Those who are not satisfied with the results can go to their targeted schools for interviews as a last resort to compete for the remaining few places.
