Supporters of the police have gathered outside the Police Headquarters in Wan Chai, saying they wanted to show their support and respect for officers who had maintained social order during protests over the extradition bill over the past two weeks.
An association of local members serving in the mainland's advisory body, the CPPCC, wrote a letter of thanks and donated HK$1 million to the force.
The association's president, Irons Sze, says society owes its thanks to police officers, who'd worked hard to maintain order during mass protests and clashes.
However, he refused to say whether the police had used excessive force against predominantly peaceful protesters on June 12, saying this should be left for the authorities to conclude.
Several other pro-government groups, such as Treasure Group, are also expected to drop by the Police Headquarters later in the day to express their support and respect for the force.
