The police say they're concerned by calls that have circulated online for a major march on Hong Kong Island to mark Halloween on Thursday, and are urging people to stay away from the area.

The force said several groups had called for an unauthorised gathering in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay, followed by a procession to Central.

"Based on past experience, such unauthorised assembly will impose serious threat to public order and public safety," police said in the statement.

"Police have already reminded shops in the vicinity to stay tuned to the latest situation and close earlier if necessary so as to tie in with police operations, ensuring the safety of lives and properties."

The force said the march could lead to extensive road blockages in Tin Hau, Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Admiralty and Central.

"Members of the public should avoid travelling to the concerned area when public disorder occurs," the force said. "Police may also close some of the roads if necessary. Cooperation and understanding from members of public will be very much appreciated."

Halloween is often one of the busiest nights in Hong Kong's bars and clubs, with revellers often donning elaborate costumes – an activity that could be complicated by the government's imposition earlier this month of an emergency ban on masks at unauthorised gatherings.
