Police are treating the death of a family of three in Western district as murder-suicide after their bodies were found in a flat on Monday night.

Police said they attended the scene after a call at about 8.25pm from a member of the public who smelt a strong odour and thought there might be a gas leak.

Firefighters forced open the door of the flat in Evergreen Tower in the Western Garden estate.

Police have confirmed that they found the bodies of a 42-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman and a seven-year-old boy.

They found a basin with burnt charcoal in the unit, and suspect the parents burned charcoal after administering pills to their son.

At a briefing early on Tuesday morning, they said the family was believed to have had financial problems.

It's the second suspected domestic tragedy in the city in two days.

On Sunday, a 55-year-old mother was arrested on suspicion of killing her 23-year-old son in their home in Tseung Kwan O before trying to hang herself.

She was charged with one count of murder on Monday and will appear in Kwun Tong Court on Tuesday.
