Police said they are investigating an incident in which an officer opened fire on a private car on Chung Nga Road in Tai Po late on Tuesday.

They said the incident took place just before midnight on Tuesday near Heng Tai House at Fu Heng Estate.

Officers said three people acted suspiciously near a vehicle, and when the police tried to stop them for questioning, one of the men attempted to run away but was quickly subdued. A small amount of suspected cocaine was seized.

The force said the two other people jumped onto the car and attempted to flee the scene.

The vehicle reportedly ignored orders to stop and even accelerated towards an officer, who felt his life was in imminent danger and fired a round at the car’s windshield.

While the bullet didn't hit anyone, the car veered out of control and hit roadside railings and overturned.

The 23-year-old male driver was arrested as he tried to run, while a 21-year-old female passenger had to be rescued from the vehicle. She suffered minor injuries and was sent to hospital for treatment.

Police said they seized 12 packs, or around seven grams of suspected cocaine in the car.

The trio were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, while the male driver was also arrested for dangerous driving.

Police appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
