Officers from the police's national security department on Monday arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with an investigation into teenager Tony Chung and two other young people linked to a pro-Hong Kong independence group.

Studentlocalism said on social media that the arrest involved another of its former members.

"Tim Luk has been arrested today by the National Security Agency for assisting fugitives," the group wrote on its Facebook account, adding "He has accepted legal assistance".

Police confirmed the arrest of a man surnamed Luk in Yuen Long and said their investigation was linked to last month's arrests of Chung and others under the national security law.

Chung, a former convenor of Studentlocalism, was charged with secession – an offence which carries a maximum punishment of life behind bars.

Two others linked to the group, Yanni Ho and William Chan, were arrested on the same day as Chung but were not charged with any offence and were released on bail.

Chung was believed to have been arrested near the US Consulate in Central, with reports suggesting he was hoping to file a claim for asylum.

The 19-year-old, who has also been charged with conspiracy to publish seditious material and money laundering, was denied bail after appearing in court on October 29.

When the national security law was implemented at the end of June, Studentlocalism announced that it would cease to operate in Hong Kong but its members overseas would continue their activities.
