Yau Tsim Mong district councillor Andy Yu said on Wednesday that the police had dropped the fine issued to a 12-year-old girl who was tackled by an officer in September amid protests against the postponement of the Legco elections.
The girl and her brother were given fixed penalty tickets in Mong Kok for violating social distancing rules – even though their family said they were out only to buy crayons.
Yu said he was informed on Wednesday that the fines issued against the pair had been revoked, though no explanation was given in the notice from the police.
Police Commissioner Chris Tang had claimed that the girl acted "suspiciously" as she ran away from officers and that prompted the police to react and use "minimum force" to subdue her.
However, the Civic Party councillor said the U-turn showed that the police had made a mistake.
He said he'll help the victims to file a complaint against the police and demand an apology from the police chief.
