Police on Tuesday formally laid charges against eight pro-democracy activists, including three former lawmakers, over their alleged involvement in unauthorised protests on July 1.
The suspects, Wu Chi-wai from the Democratic Party, Chu Hoi-dick, district councilors Andy Chui and Lancelot Chan, along with four League of Social Democrats members including former lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung, were picked up by officers in the morning.
Officers alleged that, on June 30, the suspects incited people to take part in unauthorised protests to be held the following day, and some of them also organised and led a march in Wan Chai.
Large crowds took to the streets of Hong Kong Island on July 1 despite the police's refusal to grant permission for a demonstration against the national security law which came into force the night before.
All the suspects were released on bail before their first court appearance scheduled for December 17.
The League of Social Democrats said recent police action targeting opposition figures has been aimed at creating a chilling effect. It said although many of its members have been prosecuted, it will keep on "fighting tyranny".
The group's Figo Chan said the freedom to join peaceful demonstrations is guaranteed by the Basic Law, adding that the prosecution won’t deter him from taking part in social movements in future.
