Armed riot police showed up briefly at Tamar as a memorial event to pay tributes to a university student who died during an anti-government protest ended peacefully.

A small number of participants gathered on a pavement near the Chief Executive’s Office on Lung Wo Road, shining laser pointers and shouting abuses at police even as the tens of thousands who were at the vigil had left.

Soon journalists also gathered there as things looked falling into a familiar pattern of peaceful events ending in confrontations, even though there was no attempt to set up barricades.

But at 9:30pm, over half a dozen police vehicles arrived and blocked the road. Officers raised a warning flag telling people at the site that they were taking part in an illegal assembly.

But an RTHK reporter who was at the scene said she saw only a few people and most of those present were media personnel.

As the puzzled media pack looked on, the policemen beat a retreat. They boarded the fleet of vans which made a U-turn and headed back to their base.
