  • Police arrest dozens after infiltrating triad

Police said on Thursday that they had arrested 153 people in a crackdown on triad activity in the Yuen Long and Tai Po areas.

The force said undercover officers had infiltrated a syndicate since June last year to collect evidence in relation to wounding, drug trafficking and other offences.

Those arrested were aged between 15 and 72.

Police have raided a number of premises since last month, including illegal gambling centres, bars and massage parlours allegedly controlled by the gang, seizing goods worth over HK$500,000.

Detectives say they also busted a loan sharking operation controlled by the gang, with victims charged an interest rate of 1,140 percent – 19 times higher than the law allows.

The force said it believes it has successfully dealt a blow to the income of the syndicate, and warned of more arrests to come.
