Police said on Wednesday they had made 12 arrests as they smashed a human trafficking operation that was smuggling people from Vietnam into Hong Kong from the mainland.

Officers said they intercepted a taxi carrying five illegal immigrants near Tso Wo Hang at around 6am, before making further arrests at two locations near High Island Reservoir East Dam, Sai Kung.

Six of the 12 people detained were believed to be members of the people smuggling gang, including two taxi drivers and three two-way permit holders from the mainland. The other six were Vietnamese illegal immigrants.

Authorities in Guangdong also arrested two people in connection with the case.
