A newly-built quarantine facility at Penny's Bay will come into operation later this week, the Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung said in his blog published on Sunday.

He said the site in Lantau will provide 800 units, as authorities are looking for more quarantine centres with the city reeling under a third wave of Covid-19 infections.

There've been concerns that quarantine capacities could quickly run out of space as the number of new Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong continued to rise sharply over the past week.

The temporary centre was set up at Penny's Bay, which is originally reserved for the second phase of the development of Hong Kong Disneyland. But the site has been idle for many years.

Cheung said apart from the units that are to open soon, 700 more quarantine units will be ready to use before the end of September.

The chief secretary added that the government will keep an eye on the pandemic's latest development, as well as the needs of local companies and residents in the wake of the pandemic.
