'Pan-dems poll result on Legco role indecisive'

Sources say the results of a poll conducted by pan-democratic parties on the issue of their continued presence in the Legislative Council has failed to deliver a decisive vote.

The poll, conducted by the Hong Kong Institute of Public Opinion, reportedly had found that less than half of the respondents supported the option that lawmakers continue in the council while those who wanted them to leave also failed to get a majority.

The lawmakers from the traditional pro-democracy parties had said that they would decide to stay or leave the Legco depending on the results of the poll.

Lawmakers from the camp, like the Democratic Party and the Civic Party, are scheduled to meet the media at 11.30am to explain the results.

The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress agreed last month to extend the term of Legco by at least one year to plug the gap created by the government's decision to postpone the polls due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The opposition camp has been split over the issue of whether to continue in the extended Legco and two lawmakers, Chui Hoi-dick and Ray Chan, announced they would not to serve as legislators from Wednesday, when the official term of the current council ends.
