Twenty-five pro-democracy legislators on Monday challenged Chief Executive Carrie Lam to take part in a one-on-one televised debate against Democrat James To, on her administration’s controversial plans to amend Hong Kong’s extradition law.

The planned legislation would allow the Hong Kong government to extradite criminal suspects to any jurisdiction with which the SAR does not have a formal rendition agreement, including the mainland.

The pan-democrats say the bill has raised serious concerns and the administration owes the public a clear explanation of how it will affect Hong Kong.

They’re hoping Lam will agree to take part in the debate before June 9, when a mass rally is planned to oppose the extradition bill.

The convenor of the pro-democracy camp, Claudia Mo, threw down the gauntlet, saying “we urge Carrie Lam to pluck up enough courage to rise to the occasion, and speak her mind on exactly what she is trying to achieve with this ‘evil’ law.”

If Lam gets the better of To in a debate, Mo said, fewer people may elect to take part in the march on June 9.
