The organiser of the “recover Sheung Shui” protest, Ronald Leung of the North District Parallel Imports Concern Group, said he believes at least 30,000 people took part in the demonstration on Saturday.
He said it took protesters over an hour to leave the starting point at North District Sports Ground, and stressed demonstrators have themselves to thank for the high turnout.
Leung urged the government to take the demands of the protesters seriously, and tackle the district's parallel trading problem at source.
As the protest route deviated from the original route approved by police, officers had on several occasions warned protesters they could be prosecuted for failing to comply with the letter of no objection.
But the police did nothing to stop them when the protesters insisted to go on their preferred route.
