Officials say they caught scores of people on Thursday who couldn't prove they had taken Covid tests as ordered.

The government said that during a morning operation at two buildings on Nam Cheong Street in Sham Shui Po, police and officials checked the test records of around 50 residents and found 11 had violated a recent compulsory testing notice.

Over at Man Ying Building in Jordan, more than 600 people had their test records checked, and 42 were found to have violated the testing order, the government said.

Fines of HK$5,000 and new testing orders were dished out to the alleged offenders, along with a warning that non-compliance can lead to a larger fine of HK$25,000 and six months in prison.

"The government understands that the enforcement process may cause some inconvenience to the residents, but hopes that the residents can understand," a statement said.

It added that the government would like to thank those who did take the tests as instructed.
