A police officer pulled his pistol from his holster in Whampoa late on Monday night as he ordered people to back off after shoving a man on Hung Hom Road.
Police were in the process of retreating from the area when a group of officers suddenly rushed out of a van and started running.
They did not catch anyone, but in the process there appeared to be some physical contact between an officer and a man on the street.
The officer then shoved the man twice, drawing jeers from people gathered nearby. He then briefly drew his pistol for several seconds before putting it back in his holster, as a colleague sprayed people nearby with pepper-spray.
They responded by throwing an umbrella and some water bottles at the offiers.
The policeman did not actually point his weapon at anyone before putting it away.
The officers then got back into their vans and left without making any arrests.
