The observatory said they will consider lowering the No 8 signal to strong wing signal No 3 between 6pm and 8pm on Tuesday as Tropical Storm Nangka moves further away from the SAR.
They said Nangka is about to make landfall at Hainan Island, and will weaken gradually.
At 5pm, the4 storm was centred about 530 kilometres away from Hong Kong.
The signal No 8 was issued at 5:40am, a few hours after the storm was at its closest to Hong Kong, about 440 kilometres south of the SAR.
Earlier on Tuesday, the authorities said they received eight reports of fallen trees, but no reports of landslides or flooding.
The Hospital Authority confirmed one person was admitted to hospital after getting injured during the storm, and the Home Affairs Department said 78 people were admitted to 22 temporary shelters across the SAR.
The observatory earlier defended its decision to issue storm signal number eight in the name of public safety, as the bad weather appeared to have spared many parts of the city.
