Yeung Kwok-chung talks to RTHK's Jimmy Choi

The Hong Kong Observatory said it would issue its first storm warning of the year on Friday night as a tropical depression approaches the SAR.

It said the tropical cyclone will intensify gradually, and edge closer to the coast of western Guangdong in the next couple of days.

The observatory said it will be very hot on Saturday, with a few showers and thunderstorms.

Senior Scientific Officer Yeung Kwok-chung said the tropical cyclone will be closest to Hong Kong on Sunday, bringing squally showers and swells to the seas, and a few showers on Monday and Tuesday.

Yeung told RTHK's Jimmy Choi that the Signal Number One will be issued on Friday night, but it remains to be seen whether a higher warning will be needed over the weekend.

He said that there's still a degree of uncertainty over the intensity and subsequent movement of the tropical depression and it was still some distance away from Hong Kong.
