  • Observatory predicts five-to-eight typhoons

The director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Shun Chi-ming, said on Saturday he expects five-to-eight typhoons this year, slightly more than the average of six.

Speaking on a radio programme ahead of the typhoon season, Shun also predicted 41 warm nights – that's more than twice the average of 18.

Shun also defended the Observatory against criticism that it sometimes issues signals that don't appear to match conditions on the ground, saying typhoons are unpredictable.

He encouraged people to learn more about weather forecasting and study material provided by the Observatory, which he says is now more user-friendly.
