  • Number of new Covid cases highest in a week

Health officials on Saturday reported 59 new coronavirus cases, the highest total in more than a week.

Fifty-three of the infections are locally acquired and twenty have no clear source.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection said some of the cases might be linked to holiday gatherings.

“This might be the result of the long weekends in the preceding week or two weeks. Some of the unlinked cases had some family gatherings but not all of them. Many of them are just retired and they only went to the markets or the parks for morning exercises,” she said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people working at a construction site for the new Central Kowloon Route highway are required to undergo Covid testing in light of a cluster of infections there.

Six workers have tested preliminary positive, after a confirmed case was reported on Friday.

Chuang said there are containers on the site that are being used as changing rooms, and officials are trying to find out whether the infected workers had all used these facilities.

Residents at two more buildings – one in Yuen Long and the other in Tuen Mun – are also required to undergo coronavirus tests after some infections are reported there.
