The Observatory on Friday issued the Standby Signal Number One at 8:20 pm, as a tropical storm approaches the SAR.

It's the first storm signal in Hong Kong this year.

As of 5 am on Saturday morning, Tropical Storm Nuri was estimated to be about 530 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong and is forecast to move northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour crossing the northern part of the South China Sea, edging closer to the coast of western Guangdong, and continue to intensify.

The Observatory says local winds are expected to strengthen gradually on Saturday.

According to the current forecast track, the chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal Number 3 before midday is relatively low.

Senior Scientific Officer Yeung Kwok-chung said the tropical storm will be closest to Hong Kong on Sunday, bringing squally showers and swells to the seas, and a few showers on Monday and Tuesday.
